Abstract

This book provides methods for teaching social thinking to students with high functioning autism, Asperger's Syndrome, ADHD and others, diagnosed and undiagnosed, with social thinking challenges. Superflex Superdecks are card games created to invoke your own superflexible thinking as you teach students to be more superflexible social thinkers. It's all about superflexibility! The game pack is a companion teaching tool to the popular Superflex Curriculum, which helps parents and professionals teach children ages 8 to 11 about social thinking, social regulation, and social problem solving.

The Superdecks are not an introduction to Superflex, and should only be used with students who are already familiar with the concept of being a Social Detective (introduced in the book, You Are a Social Detective), and are either working through or have completed the Superflex Curriculum. Establish a 400-word vocabulary in nonverbal children and lay the foundation for communicating with pictures and signs. Children learn the new vocabulary in a variety of formats so they truly comprehend the words.

The teaching methods are what most nonverbal children need: rote, systematic, and familiar. The activities progress in the hierarchy that most verbal children acquire language:

- learning labels and attaching meaning

- developing vocabulary and concepts

- expanding vocabulary knowledge through associations and experience

The vocabulary is divided into five themes: Home, Community, Food, School, and Animals. Each theme consists of eight units and each unit teaches 10 functional vocabulary words (total of 80 vocabulary words in each theme).
