Abstract

Abstract
Bullying in schools has garnered significant attention recently, but little has been said about the bullying of homosexuals and transexual students in Canadian high schools. This book fills that gap by exploring the experiences of youth who identify or are identified as "queer." Based on interviews with recent high school graduates in British Columbia, these researchers provide stories of physical, verbal, and emotional harassment in this group and offer insights into the negative outcomes that result from the experience of being bullied. On the other hand, however, these young people were not helpless victims: many learned to rely on resistance, inner strength, and true friends. In the last chapter, the authors make recommendations for handling homophobic and transphobic bullying in high schools and supporting students who experience this form of harassment.

Abstract
Thinksheets for Tweens and Teens focuses on the social issues and challenges faced by pre-adolescents and adolescents and introduces social concepts and strategies that can help individuals navigate these tricky years. Social rules and expectations change with age; thinking and behavior that was appropriate in elementary school can quickly become inappropriate and unexpected as students move into middle and high school. We developed these Thinksheets to help educators, therapists, and parents encourage more mature social thinking and related shifts in their students? social skills. The Thinksheets explore a wide range of topics, starting with the basic Social Thinking understanding of the Four Steps of Communication, to exploring the hidden rules of the classroom and when is it okay to correct others. Chapters include What Is Social Communication?, Problem Solving, Lessons on Emotions, Different Perspectives, Being Bossy and Jerky, Lessons on Friendships, The Social Fake and Other Tricks, and Participating in Groups. There are more than 160 Thinksheets across these 8 sections, and all are included on the Mac/PC friendly CD that comes with the book. Material in this book may be used by older students who are less mature or who learn this type of information more slowly.

In Talk Sex Today, Noon delivers an intelligent and sensible blend of current, inclusive, and practical information for children and teens - and the adults who love them. Abstract
Andrew Solomon tells the stories of parents who not only learn to deal with their exceptional children but also find profound meaning in doing so. He writes about families coping with deafness, dwarfism, Down syndrome, autism, schizophrenia, multiple severe disabilities, with children who are prodigies, who are conceived in rape, who become criminals, who are transgender. While each of these characteristics is potentially isolating, the experience of difference within families is universal, as are the triumphs of love Solomon documents in every chapter.

Abstract
Siblings tells what it is like to grow up with a brother or sister with a disability or illness. The siblings of children with a disability are often the overlooked ones in families struggling to cope.
Kate Strohm, a sibling herself, bravely shares the story of her journey from isolation and confusion to greater understanding and acceptance. She provides a forum for other siblings to describe their challenges and provides them with strategies to make sense of their experiences.
Through the workshops she has presented around Australia and overseas, Kate has been able to incorporate the experience and wisdom of many families and professionals, and provide clear tools for parents and practitioners to support brothers and sisters of those with a disability.

Abstract
At some point, children become curious about babies. This usually happens when a new baby arrives in a family (or is about to arrive and all the grown-ups are talking about it). But it can happen at other times, too.
Children want to know where babies come from in general. They also want to know, specifically, where they came from. These aren't the same question, and they don't have the same answer.
One answer articulates the unique story of their conception and birth, while the other offers the basics of how all human beings are born. Both stories are valuable. The first connects a child to their personal life history as well as their familial, cultural, and ethnic background. The second connects all children to each other; reminding us that while differences are important, and shouldn't be erased, shared humanity is a pretty cool thing, too.
This book helps adults tell children that second story. It doesn't include information about sexual intercourse, donor insemination, fertility treatments, surrogacy, or adoption. But it creates a space for you to share as few or as many of those details as you like.
Few adults are automatically comfortable talking about these things with children. For this reason, I've developed a simple reader's guide for parents. You can download it for free at www.what-makes-a-baby.com.

Abstract
The popular, research-based Prevent-Teach-Reinforce (PTR) model is used in schools and childcare settings to address challenging behaviours in children with and without disabilties. Now, with the Prevent-Teach-Reinforce for Families (PTR-F) model in this accessible guidebook, you can use this proven approach with families to help them resolve their child's challenging behaviour in their own homes and communities.
Developed by top behaviour experts, PTR-F is a highly effective intervention model that helps families prevent behaviour problems in children ages 2-10, teach proactive communication and social skills, and reinforce positive behaviour. In this expertly organized book, you'll discover how to take on the role of PTR-F facilitator to meet each family's unique needs, and you'll get a clear 5-step process for guiding families as they promote their child's positive behaviour. With this comprehensive, adaptable model of behaviour support, you'll strengthen family engagement, set each child on the path to healthy social-emotional development, and improve quality of life for the entire family.
Help families with the 5-step PRT-F Process: Initiating the process; Assessment; Intervention; Coaching; Monitoring. Practical materials include: printable forms (including a Behavior Rating Scale for data collection, Assessment Checklists, Behavior Support Plan Summary, Fidelity of Strategy Implementation Form, and complete PRT-F Plan Implementation Guide), plus extended case examples that walk you through the PTR-F steps and bring the process to life.

Abstract
Charley always seemed to get into trouble, though he didn't mean to. He was getting fed up of going to school because he felt different from most of the other kids. Then he met his Aunty Bella. And everything changed.
This illustrated children's story explains what it feels like to be a child who is different from other children. Charley seems to keep getting into trouble all the time for doing things wrong. While not labelled in the story, Charley has a specific learning difficulty. In particular, he shows dyspraxic tendencies such as clumsiness.
It is Charley's specific learning difficulty that makes him feel different and therefore unhappy at school, because he doesn't understand it. Thankfully, when Charley learns he is not alone, things begin to get better for him.
This book can be used with young children to discuss how neurodiversity (e.g. dyspraxia, dyslexia, ADHD and Asperger's Syndrome) is not a bad thing and that in fact it can have its strengths. This illustrated book helps parents, teachers, and other adults who support children, have a non-threatening discussion about specific learning difficulties with children of primary school age. Children find it easier to relate to, and discuss, the character in the story rather than have all the attention focused on them.
